Face it: We all want less stress, and what better way to ring in the new year that with a job that is less irksome, irritating, maddening?the list could probably go on for days. Perhaps combining your interest in making the earth a better place to live with your desire to make your own work life better in the coming years can lead you to tap into a much greener, gratifying job in 2013. Here are five of the top least stressful green jobs of 2013.
1. Seamstress: If you enjoy working with your hands and like working with clothes?maybe you?re an aspiring fashion designer and want to get your feet wet in the clothing field?then becoming a green seamstress might appeal to you. You can enjoy working in a peaceful atmosphere at your own pace (particularly if you run your own business), be creative and be green in the sense that you help people to salvage their clothing and even create new outfits from scraps. The mean annual wage is about $28,800, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (no college required).
2. Medical Records Technician: If you have strong attention to detail and wish to get into the booming healthcare industry, this profession might be just right for you. Particularly with many physician offices and hospitals going green by becoming paperless, your job simply entails organizing and managing health care information. The median annual wage is about $32,350 (requires a college certificate/diploma).
3. Dietitian: If you like food?and, specifically, helping people to make healthy food choices?then this career area is for you. You can encourage your clients to battle obesity by choosing green, organic food choices that are friendly to the earth and to their waistlines. The median annual wage is about $53,250 (requires a four-year bachelor?s degree).
4. Hairstylist: If you like making people feel good about themselves and enjoy the prospect of becoming a hair guru in today?s increasingly image-driven world, then perhaps hairstyling is your niche. You can introduce many green products to your clients, from environmentally shampoos and conditioners to hairsprays, and operate your own business with your own hours. The mean annual wage is about $26,460 (requires a two-year associate?s degree and cosmetology license).
5. Librarian: If you like quiet and enjoy a good book now and then, perhaps the library should become your place of employment. More libraries are going green by going digital and providing environment-focused programs for the public. The median wage is about $54,500 (requires a two-year master?s degree).
