LIFE: The photo that changed the face of AIDS

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, has suffered a stroke but is OK and resting in a Las Vegas hospital, a family friend said on Thursday. "He was doing well and says he's feeling OK," close family friend Brian Oxman told Reuters. Oxman, Michael Jackson's one-time attorney, said the 83-year-old patriarch of the pop music family started experiencing weakness on Wednesday while walking in a park near his home and was later admitted to a hospital. Jackson has a history of strokes, Oxman said. "He was talking fine," Oxman added. "He sounded excellent to me." A former ...

Soccer Goalkeeping Tips ? Recreation and Sports

The goalkeeper?s job is definitely the toughest of all soccer players. Even though a defender, midfielder or attacker can get off with a few blunders once in a while, a goal keeper?s blunders really are a lot more noticeable. To complicate things even further, modern goalkeepers have a whole lot more attributions than before. They need to coordinate the defense. They quite often have to work as sweepers, and they are able to fire off lethal counter attacks immediately after a clean save.

1 Versus 1 is a very popular routine. That being said, it?s very effective given that goal keepers are bound to become caught in a one on one challenge against an opposing attacker in practically every single game. Add to that, at beginner or youth levels, in which defenses are less demanding than they are with the professionals, 1-on-1s are quite typical for goalkeepers. You need to train them properly.

Ab Volley is one of the toughest goal keeping drills. If executed correctly, it?s an extremely effective one. Here?s how it goes: your goalie must remain on his bottom, in the very same position he?d do ab situps in. You or a teammate will need to throw the ball towards him and while he?s doing ab situps, he will pass it back to you. To speed things up a little, you can have an additional group of 8-10 players behind the goal, returning the balls back to the firing squad.

Automatic Fire. Have 8-10 players stand at about twenty to thirty yards from the goal, each with his or her own ball. At your signal, the attackers must, 1 by 1, run forward and kick the ball from a distance you specified earlier. Your goal keeper must be under a constant rain of shots, jumping from one particular post to the other to save the ball. It is not really that essential if he saves them or not, it is crucial that he understands the way to react rapidly and get up from the floor fast and be prepared for an additional shot.

DSK Settlement: Dominique Strauss-Kahn Settles With Nafissatou Diallo, New York Hotel Maid

NEW YORK ? Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and a hotel maid who accused him of trying to rape her have reached an agreement to settle her lawsuit, likely ending a legal saga that forced the onetime French presidential contender's resignation and opened a floodgate of accusations against him, a person familiar with the case said Thursday.

Details of the deal, which comes after prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last year, weren't immediately known and likely will be veiled by a confidentiality agreement. That could prevent the two from speaking publicly about a May 2011 encounter that she called a brutally sudden attack and he termed a consensual "moral failing."

Lawyers for Strauss-Kahn and the housekeeper, Nafissatou Diallo, made the as-yet-unsigned agreement within recent days, with Bronx Supreme Court Justice Douglas McKeon facilitating that and a separate agreement to end another lawsuit Diallo filed against the New York Post, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private agreement. A court date is expected next week, though the day wasn't set, the person said.

Strauss-Kahn lawyer William W. Taylor III declined to comment. Lawyers for the housekeeper didn't immediately respond to phone and email messages.

Diallo, 33, and Strauss-Kahn, 63, crossed paths when she arrived to clean his luxury Manhattan hotel suite. She told police he chased her down, tried to yank down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex.

The allegation seemed to let loose a spiral of accusations about the sexual conduct of Strauss-Kahn, a married diplomat and economist who had long been dubbed the "great seducer." He now faces charges linking him to a suspected prostitution ring in his home country.

With DNA evidence showing a sexual encounter and Diallo providing a gripping description of an attack, the Manhattan district attorney's office initially said it had a strong and compelling case. But within six weeks, prosecutors' confidence began to ebb as they said Diallo had lied about her past ? including a false account of a previous rape ? and her actions after leaving Strauss-Kahn's room.

Diallo, who's from Guinea, said she told the truth about their encounter. But the district attorney's office dropped the charges in August 2011, saying prosecutors could no longer ask a jury to believe her.

Diallo had sued Strauss-Kahn in the meantime, with her lawyers saying she would get her day in a different court. Strauss-Kahn called the lawsuit defamatory and countersued her for $1 million.

Her lawsuit against the Post concerned a series of articles that called her a prostitute and said she sold sex at a hotel where the Manhattan DA's office had housed her during the criminal case. The News Corp. newspaper has said it stands by its reporting; a spokeswoman declined to comment Thursday.

In helping resolve the cases, McKeon averted what could have been an ugly court drama.

Strauss-Kahn initially said he had diplomatic immunity, an argument the judge turned down in May. Strauss-Kahn's lawyers had since asked McKeon to throw out part of her claim for other legal reasons. Court records show the judge had yet to rule on that and several other legal issues, and it appeared that a high-stakes step ? depositions, or pretrial questioning under oath ? had not yet been taken. Depositions can give both sides information and a better picture of how strong the key parties and other witnesses might be in court.

While the vast majority of civil cases end in settlements, some legal observers were surprised that the deal between Strauss-Kahn and Diallo came before the legal arguments were resolved.

"I really expected it to go a little farther," said Matthew Galluzzo, a criminal defense lawyer and civil litigator who has been following the Strauss-Kahn case closely.

Still, the case likely had taken a toll on both Diallo, a single mother of a teenage daughter, and Strauss-Kahn, who has found himself plagued by accusations of sexual misconduct that further tarnished his reputation. The Socialist had been seen as a potential leading candidate for the French presidency before his New York arrest.

In France, judges are to decide by Dec. 19 whether to annul charges linking him to a suspected prostitution ring run out of a luxury hotel in Lille. He acknowledges attending "libertine" gatherings but denies knowing that some women present were paid.

In August, a separate case against Strauss-Kahn, centered on allegations of rape in a Washington, D.C., hotel, was dropped after French prosecutors said the accuser, an escort, changed her account to say she wasn't raped.

Soon after Strauss-Kahn's arrest in New York last year, French writer Tristane Banon accused him of attempting to rape her during an interview in 2003, a claim he called imaginary and slanderous. Prosecutors said they believed the encounter qualified as a sexual assault, but the legal timeframe to pursue her complaint had elapsed.

Strauss-Kahn has separated from his wife, journalist and heiress Anne Sinclair, who stood by him through the allegations in New York. The two said they were filing a lawsuit this summer against a French magazine, citing invasion of privacy, for reporting they had split, but Sinclair later acknowledged it was true.

The New York Times first reported the agreement between Strauss-Kahn and Diallo.

Botswana to ban big game hunting by 2014

GABORONE, Botswana (AP) ? Botswana says it will ban hunting by 2014 because of fears that the nation is losing its wildlife.

The nation's Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism made the announcement Thursday, saying the decision comes after President Ian Khama said hunting must be stopped to save the nation's big game animals. The ministry said that, left unchecked, rampant hunting would be a "genuine threat" to the country's wildlife.

The ministry said hunts by local communities and with special hunting licenses would still be allowed.

Botswana, a nation in southern Africa of 581,730 square kilometers (224,610 square miles), is home to the massive Kalahari Desert and large national parks. It has elephants, lions, giraffes and many other wild animals, making it a popular destination for big game hunters.

Secrets To Starting A Home Based Business

Starting a home-based business is one of the easiest things you can do.

Anyone can start a home-based business even people who lack in technical computer skills.

The only things needed for starting an internet home business is a website and a domain name.

You can get these for free from WordPress.org or Weebly.com.

But, if you want to present your home based business in a professional manner, you should buy the hosting and domain name.

Hosting and a domain name should only cost you about $5-$10 a month.

starting home based business

Starting A Home Based Business is Easy

Okay, it is easy to set up a website and a domain name, but the logistics of what you promote, your business plan and marketing is not so easy.

With that being said, starting a home-based business is not easy and 97% of the people who attempt it fail miserably.

There are couple of major reasons that contribute to this high rate of failure:

  1. People waste time on the wrong things.
  2. People constantly go from one opportunity to another.

Let?s take a closer look at the first problem.

Inherently, in a home-based business there are a lot of normal home distractions like family, friends and many other time wasters:

  • Email and IM.
  • Phone and texting.
  • Wasting time and energy on convincing ?Negative Nellies.?
  • Using social media the wrong way.

When you are focused and working on your high producing activities turn off your phone, IM and email.

Only check those after you have finished your high producing activities like article marketing, creating a video or blog post.

Never waste time with ?Negative Nellies,? people who really do not understand your business but have a lot of negative opinions about it.

Especially, our family and friends will be the first to say, ?Don?t waste your time on that crap, it doesn?t work.?

Once your business starts making money they will be the first to shut up and disappear.

Not only do these people distract you from your goals but they discourage you from succeeding at them.

When you a boss, he/she would tell you what to do, monitor your time and your productivity.

Being your own boss means your responsible for keeping track of what you?re time and productivity.

You must spend 95% of your time on high producing activities:

  • building your list,
  • driving traffic to your offer,
  • converting that traffic into buyers.

The second big reason people fail at starting a home-based business is constantly changing direction.

This is what it?s called the, ?next shiny object syndrome.?

There are hundreds if not thousands of home based business opportunities on the internet, promising money, fame and security.

Do your due diligence, find a company a product and a leadership you believe it and stick to it.

Become like the hungry dog with a large bone or a horse with blinders never give it up and never change your focus.

?What I Learned About Starting A Home Based Business

One major lesson I have learned in starting a home-based business.

No matter which home based business or opportunity you?re in you still have to do the same things to be successful.

You must build a list, find traffic and convert them into buyers.

So, you end in the same position you were with the last home business you were not successful in.

?

Another problem closely related to changing direction is starting more than one home based business at a time.

Everyone is looking for ?various streams of income? but if you haven?t succeeded at getting one stream.

How are you going to get various streams?

F. O. C. U. S. ? Follow One Course Until Successful

Become successful in one marketing strategy, automate the process, then rinse and repeat.

For example, you may want to get leads from YouTube.

Focus on it for at least two hours a day until you have mastered that particular marketing strategy.

Then move on to another marketing strategy.

?

To be successful in starting a home based business you must be fully committed to its success, stay focused on your goals, love what you do and do what you love.

Fitch says Argentina default is 'probable'

NEW YORK (AP) ? The credit rating agency Fitch Ratings on Tuesday downgraded Argentina, which is locked in a court battle in New York over its debt, and said the country would probably default.

Fitch cut its long-term rating for Argentina to "CC" from "B," a downgrade of five notches, and cut its short-term rating to "C'' from "B." A rating of "C'' is one step above default.

U.S. judge Thomas Griesa of Manhattan federal court last week ordered Argentina to set aside $1.3 billion for certain investors in its bonds by Dec. 15, even as Argentina pursues appeals.

Those investors don't want to go along with a debt restructuring that followed an Argentine default in 2002. If Argentina is forced to pay in full, other holders of debt totaling more than $11 billion are expected to demand immediate payment as well.

Argentine politicians, even those opposed to President Cristina Fernandez, have nearly unanimously criticized the judge's ruling as threatening the success of the debt relief that enabled Argentina to grow again.

Ratings by agencies like Fitch are used by investors to evaluate the safety of a country's debt. Lower ratings can make it more expensive for countries to borrow money on the bond market, exacerbating their financial problems.

Argentina is in a deepening recession and is grappling with social unrest. Besides the court case, Fitch cited a "tense and polarized political climate" and public dissatisfaction with high inflation, weak infrastructure and currency.

Fitch also said that Argentina's economy has slowed sharply this year.

Of the two other major rating agencies, Standard & Poor's has a rating of "B-" for Argentina, five steps above default, and Moody's rates it "B3 negative," also five steps above default.

SEC might take action against SAC Capital Advisors

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The government has told hedge fund titan Steven A. Cohen's SAC Capital Advisors that it is likely to face civil charges over alleged insider trading at the $14 billion firm, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

SAC told investors on a Wednesday conference call that the Securities and Exchange Commission had issued a so-called Wells notice to the firm, according to the source, who listened to the call.

This puts new pressure on Cohen, who is one of the world's biggest and best-known hedge fund managers. For years, his firm has been dogged by allegations that it has relied on insider information to deliver an average annual return of 30 percent since Cohen founded it in 1992.

These kinds of returns have made Cohen, 56, a billionaire many times over and drawn large funds of funds and wealthy individual clients to his firm.

The news of the Wells notice also raises questions about SAC's future and how investors are likely to react.

SAC told investors of the notice one week after the arrest of Mathew Martoma, one of its former portfolio managers.

Authorities charged Martoma with using illegally obtained information from a doctor about poor clinical results at two healthcare companies - Elan Corp Plc and Wyeth, which is now owned by Pfizer Inc - to recommend that SAC eliminate a big position in their stocks. This recommendation kept the firm from incurring millions of dollars in losses, the government said.

Also last week, the SEC filed a civil securities fraud charge against CR Intrinsic, the affiliated fund where Martoma worked.

In seeking disgorgement of $276 million in profits and avoided losses against CR Intrinsic, the SEC did not specifically name SAC Capital in last week's civil complaint.

With the arrest of Martoma, the government has now charged five former SAC employees with insider trading while working for the Stamford, Connecticut-headquartered firm. In addition, several others who once worked for Cohen also have been charged with insider trading while working for other hedge funds.

Cohen, who the source said was on the Wednesday morning conference call, has not been accused of wrongdoing.

While 60 percent of SAC's $14 billion in assets belong to Cohen and his employees, the fund's strong and steady returns have made it popular with outside investors as well. Blackstone Group LP has been a long-term investor.

With so much of the money in SAC coming from wealthy investors, the firm may not suffer from the kind of redemptions that a fund dependent on pension fund money might.

The key will be what Blackstone Group's big fund of funds does, as it once had up to $500 million in SAC and is something of a bellwether in the hedge fund industry. Blackstone's investors include smaller and midsize endowments that might get itchy about SAC's Wells notice and pressure the fund of funds to pull its money from the firm.

A spokesman for Blackstone did not return a call seeking comment.

BEARING ALL LEGAL COSTS

On the conference call, SAC President Tom Conheeney again told investors that the firm would bear all costs of defending itself against any legal action, the source said.

Conheeney also said the SEC had questioned Cohen about this matter earlier this year and that he had been responsive to all of the government's questions.

SAC spokesman Jonathan Gasthalter said last week: "Mr. Cohen and SAC are confident that they have acted appropriately and will continue to cooperate with the government's inquiry."

The FBI has been investigating SAC on and off since 2007.

Despite SAC's outstanding returns, the firm's reputation as a rough-and-tumble trading shop has sometimes prompted advisors to tell clients to get out or steer clear of the hedge fund.

Todd Petzel, chief investment officer of Offit Capital Advisors, said he had never invested with SAC because of a lack of transparency, even though he knows of the firm's "incredibly demanding culture" through interactions with Cohen and former SAC employees.

"SAC will tell you that they have incredibly rigorous compliance process," Petzel said. "I'm sure if this ever comes to court they will demonstrate in court all the training that every one of their portfolio managers goes through."

On the other hand, he said Cohen probably protected himself by distancing himself from day-to-day activities.

The SEC usually issues Wells notices, which are often not made public, to give firms plenty of warning that legal action is coming.

In the last year, hedge fund manager Philip Falcone and his Harbinger Capital Partners said they had received such notices. It is not clear when SAC got its notice.

"Certainly the Wells process and the public disclosure that there is a Wells process with respect to a hedge fund is something that is very challenging for the management of the hedge fund," said Stephen Crimmins, a partner at law firm K&L Gates in Washington.

Cohen and his top-flight legal team will probably work around the clock to try to negotiate a resolution and avoid a civil lawsuit, Crimmins said.

"It's a period of intense activity," he said. "It's a period that usually doesn't last that long, so we should expect some more news from SAC."

Church Sound: Three Ways To Mic A Hammond B3 Organ

?

The Hammond B3 is one of those iconic sounds of modern music. And by modern I mean since about the 1950s or so.

It was the invention of Lawrence Hammond. A serial inventor, he figured out that the synchronous motor he used in the first electric clock could produce musical tones.

In 1934, he unveiled the Hammond model A. They were originally sold to churches as a substitute for pipe organs.

In 1954, Hammond introduced the B3. When paired with a Leslie 122 rotary speaker, the sound was born. Starting with Jimmy Smith, Booker T. Jones, The Rascals and dozens of other bands in the ?60s and ?70s, the B3 became a staple of jazz, R&B and rock music.

The combination of the tone wheels that can produce a full chord of harmonics with a single key and the dual rotating speakers of the 122 cabinet produce a distinctive sound that is unlike any other.

I encountered a real, live B3/122 combination for the first time at a music festival where I was stage camera man. I don?t recall the artist that was on stage, but I?ll never forget walking past the 122 for the first time and being transfixed by the sound. Since then, I?ve been enamored with the rich, full and complex tones a B3 can produce.

Over the years, the churches I?ve mixed for have used synths to generate a B3 sound. And while the new ones are getting pretty good, there?s nothing like the original.

My friend Bob Heil is an avid organ player, having started playing as a teenager. Over the few years I?ve known him, he?s given me a few suggestions on how to mic a B3 (really, we?re mic?ing a Leslie 122, which is driven by a B3, but most people just call it the B3.)

A simple block diagram of the Leslie 122 speaker.

When I arrived at Coast Hills a bit over three years ago, they were using a pair of AKG C414s to mic the B3, one on top, one on the bottom. This brings up a key point; a Leslie 122 has two speakers, a top rotating horn (known as the treble speaker) and the bottom, bass speaker, which is pointed down and fires into a rotary drum with a scoop in it. As the two speed drum goes around, it utilizes the doppler effect to create a distinctive sound.

The inside workings of a Leslie 122 speaker. (Credit: Kompoz.com)

Incidentally, the rotating horn actually has two horns on it, but only one produces sound. The other is there for balance. Fun fact.

Anyway, with two mics on a B3, you do get some sense of separation between the lows and highs, and you can tell it?s a B3, but it doesn?t sound great. At this point, we hadn?t yet moved the 122 into an isolation room, and because we?re using 414?s, there is plenty of bleed in the mic?s.

The rotating horn of a 122. Only one horn produces sound.

Also, because we?re only using a single top mic, you don?t get any stereo imaging. Here?s what it sounded like back then: B3-1.mp3

Then I talked with Bob. He told me that one of his favorite methods for mic?ing a B3 is to use two mics on the top, rotating horn, located 90 degrees to each other, and flip one out of polarity. A single mic picks up the low frequency at the bottom.

As you might expect, the mics of choice were Heil PR-30s (he said 31s, but I used 30s because they?re a bit cheaper and the same element) for the top and a PR-48 for the bottom.

Our second (but really my first) attempt to get really good sound from the B3.

?Our second (but really my first) attempt to get really good sound from the B3.

As it happened, I had just pulled my 48 out of the kick (replaced by an RE320, but don?t tell Bob that?), so that went to work on the low. I ordered a pair of PR-30s and set them up as described. We also moved the 122 to an iso room to really clean up the sound. Wow?what a difference. Take a listen: B3-2.mp3

That worked great for almost a year. Then I interviewed Bob again, and we again got talking about B3s. This time, he suggested I try putting the mics on opposite sides of the top cabinet and keep them in polarity with each other. The 48 stays down low.

A few weeks ago, I gave it a shot, and again, wow. Now I?m really digging the sound: B3-3.mp3

The stereo separation is more pronounced, and I actually exaggerate it in the PA by using the SD8?s ability to decode stereo sources as extra-wide.

By doing that, the high organ sound is pushed way out to the side of the mix, where it creates some super-cool ambience, without getting in the way of the vocals.

And when I flip on the new DigiTubes and crank them up (another new SD8 feature), it sounds amazing. I?ve said it before on the show, but I?m impressed that I replace the 414s with three mics that combined don?t cost what a single 414 does. Which is why I love me some Heil microphones.

?The current mic set up. And boy, does it sound nice!

The audio files in this post are straight off the pre-amp with no processing. I tried to upload AIFF files, but they wouldn?t play in a browser. So they?re 256 kbps MP3s encoded with LAME. You?ll probably want a good set of speakers or headphones to really hear the difference in the samples. Enjoy!

By the way, much of the research on the history of the B3 came from a video I found on Bobby Owsinski?s Big Picture Production Blog.

Mike Sessler is the Technical Director at Coast Hills Community Church in Aliso Viejo, CA. He has been involved in live production for over 20 years and is the author of the blog, Church Tech Arts. He also hosts a weekly podcast called Church Tech Weekly on the TechArtsNetwork.

Ang Lee Goes Three Dimensional with ?Life of Pi? | Triangle Arts and ...

Life of Pi

The closest Ang Lee has ever come to making a massive studio film was 2003?s comic book misfire ?Hulk.? Since then, he?s cemented his status as a true auteur with ?Brokeback Mountain? and now takes on what is probably his most challenging project to date, a 3-D adaptation of Yann Martel?s beloved novel ?Life of Pi.?

Pi, a young Indian, is traveling by freighter to America with his family and the cache of animals that lived at their zoo back home when a storm strikes, sinking the ship. The only survivors are Pi and a few animals, including a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The two form an unlikely alliance as they struggle to survive being lost at sea with dwindling supplies and no end in sight. Pi learns how to work with Richard as they encounter whales, fish that jump out of the sea, and a mysterious island, though sadly not of the ?Lost? variety.

?Life of Pi? was considered an impossible novel to adapt to the screen, but Lee has pulled it off in spectacular fashion. Filming ?Pi? in 3-D instead of going the post-conversion route, every image literally pops off the screen, especially when the aspect ratio is altered to enhance the feeling of things jumping out of the screen. The only other films that have utilized the format as well as ?Pi? are ?Hugo? and ?Avatar.?

?Pi? is a unique tale of survival and friendship, and its PG rating ensures that the entire family can enjoy this unique and compelling film. The amazing 3-D alone makes the movie worth seeing and one of the movies to check out this holiday season.

Ehud Barak says he's quitting Israeli politics - FOX19.com-Cincinnati ...

By ARON HELLER
Associated Press

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak abruptly quit politics Monday, potentially robbing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a key ally who enabled his hard-line government to present a moderate face to the world.

Netanyahu's party picked a young, more hawkish list of candidates in its primary election on Monday.

Barring another comeback by the mercurial former general, Barak's departure marked an end to a distinguished and tumultuous career that spanned half a century. It began on a communal farm, led to military greatness and business success and a mixed record in politics that was highlighted by failed peacemaking efforts during a brief term as prime minister.

Despite polls showing his small centrist Independence Party gaining momentum following the 8-day Israeli offensive in Gaza that he steered, Barak said he would not run again for office in the Jan. 22 elections.

"I feel I have exhausted my political activity, which had never been a special object of desire for me," Barak, 70, said in a surprise announcement in Tel Aviv. "There are many ways for me to serve the country and society, not just through politics."

Barak will remain as defense minister until a new government is sworn in after the elections.

Still, analysts predicted that Israel's most prominent warrior-statesman of his generation had yet to say the last word and was perhaps still angling to keep his job after the election as a special appointment of Netanyahu, who is expected to be re-elected. In recent polls, Barak's party had been struggling to nudge above the electoral threshold needed to get into parliament.

"In his position, he did the smartest thing one could do," said Shlomo Avineri, a political science professor at Jerusalem's Hebrew University. "He's not as popular as an electoral candidate as he is a minister of defense. He's not going to say no if he's asked to be the next minister of defense. And he probably will."

Over the past four years, Barak gave Netanyahu's governing coalition a well-known face to deal with the international community and Netanyahu himself a loyal and seasoned partner.

The two men have been close since the 1970s, when Barak was Netanyahu's commander in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit. As prime minister, Netanyahu awarded Barak great influence in decision-making and made him his informal point man to the United States.

The Obama administration embraced him as a moderating influence on Netanyahu's hardline policies toward the Arab world and Iran's nuclear program. Barak was scheduled to depart Tuesday for meetings with U.S. officials in Washington.

His departure from politics comes at an uncertain time for Israel, with Islamist political parties rising around the Jewish state and a decision looming on whether to strike Iran's nuclear program.

The Netanyahu-Barak alliance had its strains over this issue - with the prime minister reportedly objecting to Barak's newly moderate position that Israel should defer to the U.S. in deciding whether to attack Iran should sanctions fail to deter Tehran from attaining a nuclear bomb.

In its primary election Monday, Netanyahu's Likud Party elected hard-line politicians to lead its list of candidates for the Jan. 22 election. Unofficial results, confirmed after midnight by Likud officials, showed veteran moderates pushed off the list, while younger hawks made gains.

With opinion polls forecasting an even more hawkish government taking power after the January election, Netanyahu may face increasing heat from President Barack Obama in his second term without the moderating effect of Barak.

Netanyahu's hawkish vice premier, Moshe Yaalon, is expected to become defense minister if Barak remains on the sidelines.

In a statement, Netanyahu did not reveal his hand, saying only he "respects" Barak's decision to retire and thanking him for "his contribution - over many years - to the security of the state."

A protege of the assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, another former chief of staff, Barak was groomed for greatness. Born Ehud Brog, the eldest of 4 sons to Eastern European immigrants, he changed his name in the military to Barak (Hebrew for lightning).

He became Israel's most-decorated soldier ever, collecting medals and citations at a historic pace for his heroics on the battlefield and for leading daring commando raids.

As commander of Sayeret Matkal, Barak led the 1972 raid on a hijacked Sabena airliner on the ground in Israel with the commandos disguised as airline technicians. A photograph of Barak standing on the wing in white overalls as the freed hostages were disembarking has become part of Israeli lore. The following year, he led a commando operation in Beirut, sneaking into the city disguised as a woman.

Renowned as a brilliant military strategist, he rocketed through the ranks to become military chief of staff. In 1995, after 36 years in uniform, he made the quick transition to politics.

In less than four years, Barak was elected to parliament, held two top Cabinet posts, took charge of Israel's iconic Labor Party and was elected prime minister - beating Netanyahu in 1999 - on a pledge to reach a long-awaited peace with Israel's enemies.

But his stormy term in office lasted less than two years - the shortest of any elected Israeli premier - and he left under a swell of discontent for his unilateral withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000, his failed negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria, and a violent Palestinian uprising that erupted under his watch.

Despite the dramatic collapse, Barak credited his wide-reaching offer at Camp David to withdraw from nearly all of the West Bank and Gaza with exposing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's essential rejection of peace - a view endorsed by U.S. President Bill Clinton. By offering far-reaching concessions that had never been considered before, such as dividing Jerusalem and evacuating large settlements blocs, Barak also prepared Israeli public opinion for the types of steps it would likely have to take for future peace.

In 2001, Barak was crushed by Ariel Sharon in a special election. On the night of his defeat, Barak retired in dramatic fashion. Over the next few years, he amassed a fortune on the lecture circuit and in the corporate world. He purchased a high-rise Tel Aviv apartment reportedly worth more than $10 million, part of a lavish lifestyle that angered his socialist supporters.

In 2007, he returned to politics, easily recapturing the leadership of the Labor Party and becoming defense minister in a bid to rehabilitate a military that performed below expectations in a war against Hezbollah guerrillas the previous year.

But he remained personally unpopular and his party, which had led Israel to independence and governed it for its first three decades, had lost its public appeal.

After leading Labor to an all-time low of 13 of 120 parliamentary seats in the 2009 election, Barak enraged his dovish base by joining Netanyahu's coalition government.

Israeli hardliners didn't like him any better, accusing him of undercutting the West Bank settlement movement by withholding construction approvals, clearing squatters from West Bank homes and encouraging Netanyahu to support a slowdown in settlement construction. That slowdown, initiated by the United States, has since expired.

Barak eventually broke away from Labor to form his new party, Independence, with a few junior allies. Without its founding father, the future of the party is now in question.

Avraham Diskin, a political analyst at Tel Aviv University, said given Barak's resume "it just isn't worth the effort and humiliation" of fighting for his political survival.

"If he wants to be the defense minister in the next government, it depends more on the relationship he and Bibi have than on whether he has a very tiny section in the Knesset (parliament) or not," he said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.

Former general Danny Yatom, a longtime Barak confidant, said he will be remembered most for his attempts at peace.

"Barak's legacy is steadfastly defending the security of the state of Israel alongside a deep understanding that the conflict between us and the Arabs cannot be solved by military means alone," he said. "He tried when he was prime minister, but he did not succeed."

Sonora Wedding at Union Hill Inn from En Pointe Photography

There are many, MANY reasons to fall in love with this gorgeous Sonora wedding ? the perfectly crafted DIY details, the vibrant pink hues, the utterly beautiful fabric bouquets (just to name a few) ? but all it took was one look at the breathtaking Union Hill Inn?setting and I was done for. ?In a big way. ?Because this isn?t just any wedding venue, it?s a garden-like paradise with a rustic meets dreamy chapel and a laid back elegance that is crazy amazing. ?En Pointe Photography?captured every moment and the gallery is delivering some serious pretty. ?See it all here.

Click here for the FULL wedding!

And a beautiful film from?Ipomoea Films?to cap off the day. ?Enjoy!

From the Bride? We really lucked out because both of us fell in love with the homey feeling that captures you as soon as you drive onto the property of Union Hill. There are multiple gazebos, a reception hall and a chapel all spread out amongst ponds with cattails, weeping willows, arches of tiny pink roses and irises of all colors! The owners, Barb and Don Stutzman were nothing but easy to work with as well, so that helped make it an easy decision! I knew that I wanted to do a lot of DIY crafts for our wedding that really represented Jeremiah and me, and I loved seeing how the crafts turned out and complement each other! One of my favorite crafts was Oscar the Grouch (in his wedding fur, of course). Both born in 1982, Jeremiah and I decided Oscar?s garbage can would be a fun and unique reminder of one of our favorite characters from Sesame Street! We ?personalized? a garbage can we found at IKEA and attached a paper mache Oscar to the top as our card box. Another craft I loved was making the bouquets for the bridesmaids and me, as well as the corsages for the moms and Jeremiah?s grandmother. After trying many different types of paper and fabric flowers, I settled on a mix of burlap and hand-sewn yellow and pink flowers to complement the decorations in the chapel.

The day went as well as we could have hoped for! Friends and family came from all over the country! Walking down the aisle is an unforgettable moment. Both sets of parents couldn?t have been happier. Members from both families helped decorate the different gazebos and reception hall located at Union Hill, and the final product was stunning. They helped create a photo booth that people had a blast in. We even got Jeremiah?s cousins to cater our cocktail hour from their pizza and pie Food truck! There were activities for all ages and we even had a pinata for the younger guests (as well as some older young-at-heart guests). Our officiant was Dr. Tim Blecha, a family practitioner we had both worked with out in Superior, a rural town in Nebraska. He was our favorite of all the doctors that? we had ever worked with, and as future rural docs ourselves, we could think of no better person to marry us! He had flown all the way with his wife to join in on the festivities and really added to the uniqueness of the ceremony with great, and sometimes embarrassing, anecdotes of both of us as students while working with him. The rest of the evening was just what we wanted ? people getting down on the dance floor! Some may attribute their dance moves to the super moon that was shining in the sky that night, but we think it?s because our friends and family know a good song and how to get their grooves on! Jeremiah and I donned our shirts that we had bought in Boracay, Philippines, earlier in the year. These shirts had designs that were hooked to a battery pack that responded to the beat of the music. Oh, did we have fun with those!

Jeremiah?s mom made us quilt squares that were hung behind our wedding cake to represent our journey from being med students at Creighton to our time as family medicine residents back home in Northern California. Both sides of the family helped decorate Union Hill, so everyone had a great time seeing the fruits of their labor appreciated, especially when it came to the photo booth! Our invitations were mini books that we designed through Minted. We loved the mini books because they allowed us to tell a story and still provide information about the big day. I particularly loved that a lot of the major crafts were handmade. Each bridesmaids? bouquet was different with hand-sewn flowers, and I got comments from other brides-to-be afterward that they were inspired to do DIY crafts themselves! I loved the colors in the bridal party and from the natural beauty of Union Hill! One of my roommates from college helped us mix dough ? in our wedding colors ? for over 400 cookies that we personalized with Williams Sonoma?s Message in a Cookie cookie cutter set. We also had table favors that were mini pinatas that were filled with candy. Each had a table marker with a picture and description of a place Jeremiah and I have traveled to in the past so our guests could get to know us and our love of traveling a little better. The best part was that we had so many of our dear friends and practically all of our family members in attendance! Some people we hadn?t seen in years were there, and it was so heartwarming to share our special day with all of them!

Correction: TV-CBS-Half Man story

(AP) ? In a story Nov. 26 about Angus T. Jones, the teenage actor in "Two and a Half Men," criticizing the show as "filth" in an online video, The Associated Press misidentified the organization that posted the video. It was Forerunner Chronicles in Seale, Ala., not Forerunner Christian Church of Fremont, Calif.

A corrected version of the story is below:

'Two and a Half Men' actor calls his show 'filth'

Teenage 'Two and a Half Men' actor calls his show 'filth,' urges viewers to stay away

By DAVID BAUDER

AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) ? The teenage actor who plays the half in the hit CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men" says in a video posted online by a Christian church that the show is "filth" and that viewers shouldn't watch it.

Nineteen-year-old Angus T. Jones has been on the show, which used to feature bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen and remains heavy with sexual innuendo, since he was 10 but says he doesn't want to be on it anymore.

"Please stop watching it," Jones said. "Please stop filling your head with filth."

Jones plays Jake, the son of Jon Cryer's uptight divorced chiropractor character, Alan, and the nephew of Sheen's hedonistic philandering music jingle writer character, Charlie. Sheen, who has publicly criticized CBS, was fired and replaced by Ashton Kutcher, who plays billionaire Walden.

In the video posted by Forerunner Chronicles in Seale, Ala., Jones describes a search for a spiritual home. He says the type of entertainment he's involved in adversely affects the brain and "there's no playing around when it comes to eternity."

"You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that," he said. "I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show."

CBS and producer Warner Bros. Television had no comment Monday.

"Two and a Half Men" survived a wild publicity ride less than two years ago, when Sheen was fired for his drug use and publicly complained about the network and the show's creator, Chuck Lorre. Sheen later said he wasn't still angry at the sitcom's producers and the network and acknowledged he would have fired himself had he been in their shoes.

The show was moved from Monday to Thursday this season, and its average viewership has dropped from 20 million an episode to 14.5 million, although last year's numbers were somewhat inflated by the intense interest in Kutcher's debut. It is the third most popular comedy on television behind CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family."

The actors on "Two and a Half Men" have contracts that run through the end of this season.

When there is no expectation of repayment, the amount of money can be viewed a gift. The actual giver couldn't sue for repayment after inside a civil fit. However when the loan supplier designates the cash like a loan as well as the customer pays back even a dollar, the amount of money can be viewed a real loan and also the loan company can need payment anytime. Small statements legal courts spend a lot of period identifying regardless of whether a financial transaction which include money would have been a present as well as loan. For this reason documents is very important when designing personal lending options to pals or family members.

The needs for getting a loan are pretty straight forward. In case you are employed, having a month-to-month earnings regarding $800 or maybe more, and also a bank account, you fulfill the fundamental requirements. Some creditors within our network might have extra needs.

Cash financial products tend to be unprotected lending products removed on the next salary. Since they're short-term financial products, they may be small; various from $100 to $1500 and repayment comes to the next pay day. They could be very useful for overcoming a quick monetary urgent situation, yet really should not be viewed as the long-term monetary option.

Previous credit rating is virtually usually regarded as, together with current earnings and also assets. The aim of the borrowed funds may also be an issue-a established expense chance may have a lot more appeal compared to an misguided concept for any new eating place. When it comes to gender gap, men play crucial role

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sorry, fellas, but President Barack Obama's re-election makes it official: Women can overrule men at the ballot box.

For the first time in research dating to 1952, a presidential candidate whom men chose decisively ? Republican Mitt Romney ? lost. More women voted for the other guy.

It's surprising it didn't happen sooner because women have been voting in larger numbers than men for almost three decades, exit polls show.

But men, who make up less than half the U.S. population, always have exercised power greater than their numbers and they aren't about to stop now.

When it comes to elections, males as a group are more influential because they show less party loyalty than women, who skew Democratic.

Despite all the focus on candidates courting Hispanics or the working class, men are the nation's ultimate swing voters; they're why Republican George W. Bush became president and Republican John McCain didn't.

Their move away from Obama this year expanded the voting "gender gap." It wasn't enough to determine the outcome, but came close.

So presidential hopefuls staring into the gender gap in 2016 might want to look beyond the usual controversies over "women's issues" such as abortion or the polling fads such as "Wal-Mart moms." Maybe it's time to pause and consider the fickle male. Maybe it's time to ask, "What do men want?"

In the voting booth, that is.

"I don't think we fully understand it yet," political scientist Christina Wolbrecht of the University of Notre Dame said about why men and women vote differently. But she said plenty of research on elections going back to the 1950s indicates it's not because of issues such as equal pay, birth control coverage in health plans or Romney's awkward reference to "binders full of women."

Paul Kellstedt has some ideas. A Texas A&M associate professor of political science, Kellstedt studies what American men and women want from their government and how that shifts over time.

Like Wolbrecht, he noted that the sexes aren't that different, at least when it comes to the issues.

Studies have found that the opinions that separate liberals and conservatives, even on issues such as abortion, don't divide the sexes much. Men and women are about as likely to fall on either side of those debates, and millions of each happily line up with each political party.

But there has been a consistent thread of disagreement for decades over what role the government should play. It's not a big gap, but it is statistically significant, about 4 percentage points or 5 points in many studies, Kellstedt said. As a group, women tend to like bigger government with more health and welfare programs; men lean toward smaller government that spends less, except on the military.

Sort of the social safety net versus rugged individualism. Or Obama versus Romney.

There are lots of possible reasons the genders see this differently.

Besides women's traditional role as family nurturers, they also live longer than men and so are more likely to rely on Social Security and Medicare. Women are more likely to be poor. They're more likely to be single parents struggling to pay for child care, education and medical bills. Men may feel many social programs are expensive and won't benefit them.

"Women tend to believe that government has a role to play, that it should be a partner in their life," said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. "Men tend to think it's been a good day when the government hasn't done anything bad to you."

When the nation as a whole drifts to the left or right on the big government-small government debate, the gap between men and women fluctuates. Men and women shift their views in the same direction, Kellstedt said, but men as a group tend to change their minds faster and move their views farther.

"The variation among men's opinions is larger," he said. "The flighty, moody ones are the men, not the women."

He said this difference of opinion on the role of government isn't big enough to entirely explain the larger gender gap in voting, however. "It's a little bit of a puzzle."

Women as a group voted Democratic in the past six presidential races, from 1992 through 2012, according to exit polls. The last time they decisively supported a Republican was Ronald Reagan's re-election in 1984. The Reagan years were when Americans first began taking note of the "gender gap," as women's rights groups emphasized that female support for Reagan in 1980 was narrow while male voters overwhelmingly endorsed him.

Men lean Republican but play the field. In the past six presidential races, men voted Republican three times, Democratic twice (including barely supporting Obama in 2008), and essentially split their vote in the 1996 Bill Clinton-Bob Dole race, exit polls show.

This year Obama campaigned on giving a leg up to those needing education, health care or job training. Romney talked about shrinking government, except for the military, and said overgrown social programs were creating a culture of dependency. Their arguments fit the long-running fissure of the gender gap.

"Women stuck with Obama," said Karen Kaufmann, a University of Maryland associate professor who studies the gender gap. "We didn't see a lot of movement from women. The movement was really men going back to the Republican Party."

Women's support for Obama dropped just 1 percentage point from 2008; they voted for him by 55 percent to 44 percent this time. Men's support for Obama dropped 4 points, flipping them to Romney's side, by a 52-45 margin. Women were 10 percentage points more likely to vote for Obama than men were, according to the survey of voters at the polls conducted for The Associated Press and television networks.

Gallup polling has tracked the gender gap since 1952. Gallup says this year's gender divide was 20 percentage points, the largest ever using its method of calculation.

The gender gap isn't just a white thing. It exists even among minorities that vote overwhelmingly Democratic. Obama got 96 percent of black women's votes, but 87 percent of black men's, compared with 76 percent of Hispanic women and 65 percent of Hispanic men, according to the exit poll.

"We group together this white male vote and sort of put that in the Republican ledger and we don't talk enough about all the various subgroups that fit within men and the multiple issues and currents that determine how they're going to vote," said sociologist Donald Levy, director of the Siena College's research institute.

"The Democrats aren't succeeding with some of these folks," Levy said. The Democratic Party needs to figure out why, he said, the same way "the Republicans are doing some soul-searching about how they can appeal to women."

Jammer's Blog: Becky's Wedding

So Becky got married. I don?t believe it either. It?s not because she?s unattractive. On the contrary, she?s a shorter version of my gorgeous wife. There are two things I just want to point out. First, to me, Becky didn?t seem ready for a commitment like marriage. Before she started dating her husband, Josiah, she had been in a short relationship. People get in and out of relationships all the time, so that?s not a big deal. However, the issue with this particular relationship was that you could smell the stench of horse feces off of this guy a mile away, and she didn?t pick up on it. In her defense, none of the other family members did either. Maybe it was because he was white and white people just trust other white people. Whatever. (Also in her defense, she wasn?t the first person, nor will she be the last, to have one of those, ?what was I thinking?? relationships- myself included).

Second, I was the only person who called the guy?s bluff. You know the thing that makes Becky really upset? It wasn?t about the relationship not working out, but that I was absolutely right from day one. It burns her, and I enjoy that.

So you could imagine when she started dating Josiah about 20 minutes after her relationship ended with this ?other guy,? I naturally had some reservations. Interestingly enough, he was also white. And you know what? That?s right, you guessed it; the family immediately embraced him. Did anyone ask for my opinion? Of course not, I?ve only had a 100% track record. So what do I know?

I don?t know Josiah all that well, but I did have one conversation with him. And you know what? That?s all it took for him to earn my approval (not that anyone was asking for it). The conversation was in stark contrast when compared to the ?other guy.? I saw genuine character in both what he was communicating and the way in which he was communicating it. He had clear purpose about what he wanted to do with his life and articulated his vision like a man who actually had given it some thought. The conversation was pleasant and refreshing. As long as he remembers he?s son-in-law #2 things should be fine.

Fast forward to the wedding day: Josiah and Becky decided to have their wedding reception the same place we had our wedding. I remember it like it was yesterday. My wife and I had a nice swing dancing routine for our first dance because we didn?t want the 7-minute slow song hug that starts getting awkward after 2-mintues. Each of my groomsmen gave an excellent speech, and Becky had an epic emotional meltdown before anyone even handed her the microphone. It was good memories all around.

Now I?m sitting at my table enjoying the moment holding my baby girl while I watch my wife give the wedding toast (she did an excellent job). Then it hits me, I have a child and my wife?s little sister is becoming a woman right before my eyes. All of these memories of Becky start flooding into my mind. Like the first time I picked up Katie for a date and saw Becky who basically looked like a smaller version of Katie with braces and the raspy voice of person whose been smoking for 40 years. I also thought of all the immature rants and emotional meltdowns that didn?t involve having to give a wedding speech. I remember hearing all her complaints about things that were insignificant and wondering if she would ever ?get it.?

Flashing back to my table at the reception: Becky was a beautiful bride and looked like the woman she had grown into. My in-laws never had a doubt she would someday ?get it.? Maybe that?s the kind of unconditional love and patience I?ll need to give my daughter. Maybe kids from strong Christian families should be given the same amount of grace as those who grew up in broken homes. Maybe maturity can?t be rushed but only nurtured, like it was for me. Maybe there?s a lesson in all of this for me.

Anyway, there is a sense of excitement I feel for my sister-in-law. There?s also a genuine happiness that she found a good man (even though nobody asked for my opinion). Perhaps the most exciting aspect of it all? She?s going to be stationed in Japan for 3 years and the prospect of Becky in a foreign country should give way to plenty of source material for comedic relief.

home improvement | holiday entertaining

Will you being doing a lot of hosting over the upcoming holiday season? Is your home ready or are you worrying about home improvements that you need to tackle? Here are a few ideas to help make the holidays more memorable and less stressful.

Deep-clean and De-Clutter

I know, I always come back to these two but frankly, if you don?t have time to do anything else before your guests start knocking on the door, these have got to be done. Go beyond the usual superficial cleaning and steam-clean the carpets and upholstered furniture, polish the wood trim, dust the light fixtures and clean the oven.

Finish Those DIY Projects
Finish all of the do-it-yourself home remodeling projects that you?ve started but never quite finished. Hang the last of your travel photos, give the bathroom a fresh coat of paint, fix the squeaky front door and make sure all of the light bulbs are working.

?Tis The Season
?to put up the Christmas lights, shovel the snow, and spread grit or ice melt on the walkways and front porch so no one slips on the way up your steps. Also think about changing up the decor to something seasonal and festive.

Island Buffet
If you will be hosting a large number of people and you think it will be too tight to fit everyone in the dining room, serve up a more informal buffet-style meal where folks can help themselves to cold or warm finger foods. You can spread out the platters on your kitchen island, or on a sideboard or buffet. Adding an island is one of the best kitchen remodeling tips that I can give anyone who is re-doing their kitchen. Even if you aren?t doing an entire gut-job or overhaul, you can still have an island installed or you can buy a smaller-scale island or counter-topped cart on casters that you can roll out of the way when it?s not in use.

Frankly, the countdown is on to the holiday festivities. Keep things simple, tackle the smaller scale home improvement projects that you can handle in the next few weeks and busy yourself filling your home with cheer and tradition. All you really need to make a gathering memorable is good food, a warm and welcoming atmosphere and your family and friends.

Treetop tents, tear gas: French protest turns ugly

PARIS (AP) ? Protesters squatting in treetop tents and makeshift shelters are battling French riot police trying to expel them from the site of a planned airport in western France.

Officers hurled tear gas projectiles and protesters responded with gas bombs and stones, as the two sides went head to head for a second day over a project that critics say will destroy woodland and cause pollution.

Eight people were arrested Saturday and three were hurt in the fighting, according to the Sipa news agency.

The issue has split the Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, which includes some Green Party members. Ayrault is the longtime mayor of the nearby city of Nantes and has championed the airport plan.
